Big RSE Lesson tackles LGBT+ history

Around 15,000 young people tuned in for an online RSE lesson celebrating LGBT+ history – and the resource is still available for schools to use.

The virtual lesson was hosted by sexual health and wellbeing charity Brook and saw students from more than 620 schools in England and Wales watching live.

Aimed at students in year 9 and above, the lesson explored the richness of LGBT+ history with the aim of challenging stereotypes, promoting understanding and celebrating diversity.

The lesson gave an overview of key points in LGBT+ history and highlighted some influential LGBT+ figures from the last 100 years, as well as discussing the importance of inclusivity and allyship in the present. The session included a myth-busting quiz as well.

Brook expert Nick Dunne, who delivered the lesson along with Sarah Simons, said: “What better way to celebrate LGBT+ History month than to provide 15,000 young people with an opportunity to learn about queer culture throughout the decades.
