Heads Up campaign encourages the headteachers of the future

Perceptions about the job of being a headteacher must change and the myths must be dispelled if we are to tackle the shortage of people applying for the top job.

The call to action is being spearheaded by the Future Leaders Trust, a charity that develops leaders to work in challenging schools.

It has published a 20-page report – entitled Heads Up – that draws on the findings of surveys and research and includes a number of short commentaries from practising headteachers and key figures in education discussing how we can tackle the leadership shortage.

Among the quoted survey statistics, the report warns that:

Other barriers highlighted by research and discussed in the report include a reluctance among female or Black, Asian and minority ethnic teachers to apply for positions because of fears of bias in the selection process.
