Young carers are going ‘under the radar’

Four out of five young carers are going ‘under the radar’ according to new research. Emma Lee-Potter looks at the findings

Caring for a sick, disabled or mentally ill member of your family can be physically gruelling, mentally taxing and emotionally draining.

The responsibility is even more demanding for children tasked with caring for sick parents or siblings, especially if they receive little or no outside support.

A new study by the Children’s Commissioner for England has found that four out of five young carers aged five to 17 are “under the radar” and do not receive any support at all from their local authority.

According to the Children’s Commissioner’s report, which was published at the end of last month, as many as 130,000 children with caring responsibilities may be unknown to local authorities.
