Web filter study raises concerns

Internet filters used to protect teenagers’ online activity may be ineffective, a new study has warned.

Researchers from the University of Oxford found that the use of internet filters at home did not lessen the risk of teenagers having unpleasant online experiences.

The academics analysed data from interviews carried out by Ofcom with 515 young people aged between 12 and 15 across the UK. The survey also asked the youngsters’ parents whether they used technical tools to manage their children’s access to online content and block unsuitable websites.

Nearly one in six (14 per cent) of the young people interviewed said they had had at least one negative online experience during the past year. Eight per cent said they had been contacted online by someone they did not know and who wanted to be their friend.
