Voucher fitness pilot targets year 9 pupils

A group of 1,000 year 9 pupils in Swansea are taking part in an innovative project to encourage them to be fit and active.

The initiative, funded by the British Heart Foundation, aims to assess whether giving teenagers vouchers to spend on physical activities of their choice can improve their fitness and reduce the time they spend watching television, using computers and playing video games.

The youngsters, all aged 13 and 14, will be able to choose from a host of activities, including dancing, football, swimming, karate, skateboarding and BMX.

Pupils from eight Swansea schools are involved in the project. Four schools will receive £20 per month in vouchers for a year to spend on physical activities of their choice. The other four schools will act as a comparison group but will receive a fully funded mindfulness course for pupils and teachers in return for participating in the project.
