Transition a key focus in government sports strategy

The government’s new sports strategy will see Sport England’s remit – which currently covers those aged 14 and above – extended to all children and young people aged from five upwards.

The charity’s funding and grants will also now specifically target those groups with low participation rates in sport, including disabled people, girls and women, and the disadvantaged.

Investment for sports projects will also prioritise those which teach skills, help social inclusion and improve both physical and mental health.

The strategy – entitled Sporting Future – commits the government to continuing to invest in the primary PE and Sport Premium and to continue to advise schools on how to use the funding.

It also highlights the importance of the transition from primary to secondary school – a time when physical activity can tail off.
