Thousands of SEN pupils without EHCPs as they move to secondary school

Inclusion
More than 3,800 SEN children have been left without a transition plan to help them move from primary to secondary school this September.

Freedom of Information requests have revealed thousands of cases where local authorities have missed the February 15 legal deadline for producing a final transition Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) for children with SEN.

Local authorities have a legal duty to carry out a transition review and an EHCP needs assessment for children moving to secondary school this September.

Local authorities were asked by specialist education lawyers Simpson Millar under FoI legislation how many children with SEN in their areas required an EHCP for transitioning to secondary school and how many actually received one. The figures show that 3,812 did not receive their EHCP by the deadline, including 315 in London, 900 in the South East, 835 in the Midlands, and 763 in the North West.
