Furthermore, the findings from the National Literacy Trust show that writing enjoyment and frequency reduce as pupils get older, with boys also much less likely to enjoy writing.
The report Children’s and Young People’s Writing in 2014 summarises the findings of the Trust’s fifth annual survey of more than 32,000 eight to 18-year-olds.
Overall, children’s enjoyment of writing has started to increase slowly over the last three years but reading is still more popular (49.3 per cent say they enjoy writing compared to 54.4 per cent who enjoy reading).
However, while 57.4 per cent of pupils in key stage 2 enjoy writing, this falls to 47.1 per cent at key stage 3 and 38.8 per cent by key stage 4.
