Sport improves health, wellbeing and confidence, says Olympian

Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill has called for more to be done to encourage young people – particularly girls – to play sport.

The athlete, who won the heptathlon at the London 2012 Olympic Games, believes that sport not only improves youngsters’ health but boosts their self-esteem too.

“Confidence has played a big part in my success as an athlete,” she said. “The enjoyment, focus and determination that sport gave me as a young person was a huge part of developing my confidence and self-belief as I grew up.

“Sport can improve health, wellbeing and confidence while also teaching valuable life-skills.”

Ms Ennis-Hill was speaking at a Sky Academy Confidence Day in Sheffield last month. The event aimed to develop young people’s confidence through sport and gave more than 300 11 to 18-year-olds the opportunity to build their confidence by trying new sporting activities.
