Spike in reports of anxiety among young people

ChildLine is receiving almost 1,000 calls a month from children and young people who are struggling to deal with their anxiety.

The charity has raised its concerns after seeing more than 11,706 calls in total during 2015/16 – a 35 per cent increase on the year before.

Furthermore, ChildLine says that the problems are getting worse, with 6,500 calls involving problems with anxiety coming in the last six months alone – an average of almost 1,100 a month.

It says that children who are calling about their anxiety are being affected by personal and family issues as well as world affairs such as the EU referendum and conflict.

The contacts have come from young people aged up to 18, but some have been made by children as young as eight-years-old. Girls are seven times more likely to contact ChildLine for help about anxiety than boys.
