Schools will be included in plans for public sector Apprenticeships

The government is pushing ahead with its plans to require public sector organisations, including schools, to employ apprentices – despite warnings of the likely impact on school budgets.

New rules will require that public sector organisations with 250 employees or more must have at least 2.3 per cent of their workforce made up by apprentices.

The requirement, which is detailed in the Enterprise Act 2016, will come into force in April and it means a school with 250 employees will have to hire six apprentices.

Skills minister Robert Halfon announced on Friday (January 20) that the Department for Education is setting a target of 200,000 apprentices in the public sector by 2020. It is part of the government’s target of creating three million Apprenticeships across the country by the same date.
