Schools await call to take on National Reference Test duty

As many as 18,000 students in England will take the first-ever National Reference Test (NRT) in February and March next year in a bid to inform the awarding of GCSE grades.

Exams watchdog Ofqual has been trialling the tests, which have been developed by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), and around one in 40 year 11 students will take them annually.

However, the tests, which are in English and maths and will take an hour to complete, will not be used during the GCSE awarding process until “at least” 2019.

The goal behind the tests is to keep a track of differences in ability and performance between GCSE cohorts. The results will mean Ofqual can more easily make decisions about whether to allow exam boards to award higher grades. It is also aimed at tackling accusations of grade inflation.
