Nicky Morgan under pressure over fairer funding promise

School leaders and MPs have stepped-up pressure for the early publication of government proposals outlining a new fairer funding formula for schools – a key Conservative election manifesto pledge

The government is coming under increasing pressure – from MPs and school leaders – to publish its plans to overhaul the school funding system.

A commitment to fairer school funding was included within the Conservative General Election manifesto, but so far nothing has been forthcoming.

There are huge funding disparities across England, with an analysis earlier this year showing that schools in the 10 best funded areas get an average of £6,297 per-pupil while those in the 10 worst funded areas get £4,208.

This equates to a budget shortfall in a typical secondary school of 920 students of around £1.92 million – enough to hire 40 teachers.
