New award will recognise schools that teach democracy

A new award that encourages pupils to take an interest in the democratic process has been launched.

Created by the British Youth Council, the Discovering Democracy Award seeks to recognise schools that engage students in democratic processes, especially young people aged 16 and over.

The award is judged across four areas including student participation, which could include a fully elected school council that is engaged in whole-school processes, and student-led action, whereby young people can implement change at their school or are involved in local campaigning.

The award also recognises whether schools offer opportunities for students to register to vote and lessons, assemblies or talks from guest speakers on democratic issues.

The award is to be judged by a panel of young people and successful schools will get a certificate and the right to host the Discovering Democracy logo on their website.
