Minister under pressure over 1 to 9 GCSE grade shake-up

Secondary school headteachers are putting the Northern Ireland education minister under renewed pressure to mirror a GCSE grade shake-up in England.

The Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) wants the North to adopt the same new numerical 1 to 9 grades due to be introduced elsewhere.

They fear pupils receiving grades on the A* to G scale will be at a disadvantage when applying for university places under the new system. Members of the Assembly’s Education Committee have already voiced concerns.

Most pupils take exams offered by the North’s exams board, the CCEA. However, many take papers set by boards from England too. If no change is made in Northern Ireland, from 2018 some pupils will receive a combination of alphabetical and numerical grades.
