Frustrated MPs demand a response to statutory SRE call

Nine months on from an MPs’ inquiry which called for SRE and PSHE to be made statutory subjects, education secretary Nicky Morgan has received a strongly worded letter demanding a response

The education secretary has received a strongly worded letter demanding a response to MPs’ recommendation that PSHE and sex and relationships education (SRE) be made statutory subjects in schools.

It has been more than nine months since the Education Select Committee published the report Life Lessons after its inquiry into PSHE and SRE.

In the report, MPs on the committee said that they had uncovered a very confusing picture about the status of SRE and PSHE. This led them to call for both subjects to be given clear statutory status.

Among a range of further recommendations, the report also called on ministers to “formally endorse and promote” the 2014 guidance Sex and Relationships Education for the 21st Century. This was produced by Brook, the Sex Education Forum (SEF) and the PSHE Association because the most recent government guidance dates back to 2000 and is considered by experts to be out of date.
