A group of charities and businesses has appealed to world leaders to tackle the global problem of illiteracy as a matter of urgency.

Project Literacy, a five-year initiative launched by Pearson, is campaigning on behalf of the
757 million people around the world who cannot read or sign their name. Illiteracy affects 11 per cent of the global population and costs the world $1.19 trillion (£1.25 trillion) a year.

To mark the launch, Project Literacy took the world’s largest petition to the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, where 193 world leaders were last week attending the UN General Assembly.

The petition called on global leaders to acknowledge the urgency of the international literacy crisis and to pledge to take “meaningful action” to address it.
