College of Teaching membership consultation

School staff across the country are being asked to debate some key membership questions for the new College of Teaching, including whether access should be restricted to practising teachers only.

The Claim Your College coalition – the group that is developing plans for a College of Teaching – is asking teachers to hold discussions in their staffrooms on January 6.

The Big Staff Meeting initiative is posing four key questions including who should be allowed to join and what benefits teachers think membership should bring.

Teachers are invited to put forward any kind of membership option they like, although the four suggested options are that membership should be:

A pack produced to support the Big Staff Meeting includes essays from different members of the Claim Your College group arguing for different options.

Secondary teacher Andrew Old argues for a teacher-only membership: “Whatever things the College of Teaching does must be things that help establish teachers as professionals. This key purpose is utterly undermined if many of the members are not what would normally be called ‘teachers’.”
