Around 150 Churchill Fellowships are awarded each year. They were set up by public subscription as a living memorial to Sir Winston Churchill on his death in 1965 and have been awarded to more than 5,500 people since then. They are awarded by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.
Sixteen Fellows were unveiled last week, including STEM co-ordinator Elaine Manton, who will be travelling to Australia and America to investigate innovative approaches to STEM education, including coding and robotics. She will also look at how to better encourage girls to pursue STEM subjects.
Other themes for the Fellows include school leadership in the 21st century, happiness, wellbeing and mental health in schools, and mentoring programmes for disadvantaged pupils.
