At a glance headlines: 4/2/2016

An £80 million boost to support SEND pupils and resources to teach about testicular cancer are among the SecEd At a glance headlines for Thursday, February 4, 2016.

A package of £80 million to support children with SEND has been announced by the government, including around £36 million for local authorities to support the implementation of the SEND reforms.

The new system has seen a move from SEN Statements to 0 to 25 Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), as well as a requirement on local authorities to publish “local offers” detailing the SEND support available.

However, research last year by the National Autistic Society (NAS) found that half of parents who had been through the transition to the new EHCPs were dissatisfied, with many feeling let down by the “stressful” process of applying for and securing statutory support. Sarah Lambert from the NAS said: “The new SEND system has the potential to transform the prospects of a generation of children. But poor local implementation in some areas has meant that many parents are still facing long and stressful battles trying to get the right support for their child. The funding unveiled today is recognition of this problem and should help address it.
