At a glance headlines: 25/2/2016

A snapshot teacher pay survey, an inquiry into Apprenticeships and a scheme to cut car journeys to school are among the SecEd At a glance headlines on Thursday, February 25

A snapshot survey has shown that half of schools have resisted calls from teaching unions to give experienced teachers – on M6 on the teacher pay scale – a two per cent pay rise. Fifty-two per cent of the 111 schools quizzed by law firm Winckworth Sherwood continued to offer M6 teachers one per cent, despite a change in policy allowing two per cent rises. James Lynas, employment partner at Winckworth Sherwood, said: “It’s clear that even though the restrictions have been loosened, most schools don’t feel able to foot the bill for additional pay.”

Schools are being urged to sign up for the Big Pedal, which aims to reduce the number of car journeys to and from the school gates. Last year the initiative prevented more than two million car journeys, with children, parents and teachers encouraged to use bikes, scooters and other means instead. Schools and classrooms are encouraged to compete against one another. This year’s event takes place from April 18 to 29. It is run by charity Sustrans. Visit: www.sustrans.org.uk/bigpedal
