Ramadan and examinations

Exams watchdog Ofqual has confirmed that this summer’s examinations have not been moved to accommodate Ramadan – and nor will they be.

A statement was issued by chief regulator Dame Glenys Stacey in reaction to comments made by Ofsted chief inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw during a LBC radio phone-in show.

Dame Glenys said: “Ofqual and the Joint Council of Qualifications (JCQ) liaise with a broad range of groups regarding exam timetables far in advance of exams being sat. Schedules are set to ensure that, as far as possible, no child is disadvantaged due to the timing of exams. This includes consideration of those who follow Islam.”

It comes after a number of national newspapers claimed earlier this month that exams would be moved to accommodate Ramadan. Sir Michael was asked about the issue during the LBC show and said that to move them would set a difficult precedent.

The JCQ statement issued earlier this month, said: “There has been a clear misunderstanding in some parts of the media as to how the GCSE and A level timetable is set and the impact religious events, such as Ramadan, Easter and Passover, have on it. It is important to note that the timetable for 2016 was drafted over a year ago, is published, and won’t be changing.”

Ramadan is commemorated by Muslims, with fasting during the hours of daylight. Its dates change annually and it begins on June 7 this year.

Careers inquiry

Another inquiry into the state of careers advice has been launched by MPs. The newly formed Committee on Education, Skills and the Economy has set-up the inquiry to look into the quality of current careers advice, the effectiveness of careers advice in supporting people into Apprenticeships, and how careers advice can match skills with the needs of the jobs market. The Parliamentary committee will focus on developments since the Education Select Committee published its report, Careers Guidance for Young People, in 2013. Visit: http://bit.ly/1RuJTa9
