At a glance headlines: 12/11/2015

A mentoring project for deaf students, support for young people thinking of running away from home, and using film to teach literacy are among the SecEd 'at a glance' headlines for Thursday, November 12

A project that trains deaf pupils aged 10 and above to mentor other deaf children of all ages has been unveiled by the National Deaf Children’s Society. Nearly 80 per cent of deaf children in England attend a school where they may be the only deaf child enrolled. The Helping Hands project aims to improve the confidence, skills and aspirations of deaf children by training deaf pupils, aged 10 to 18, to take-up mentoring roles. A toolkit is available to help schools to launch support groups. Visit: www.ndcs.org.uk

A website aimed at potential runaway children has been launched by national charity Missing People. The site has been developed by the team that runs the charity’s free, 24/7 confidential helpline service. An estimated 140,000 people under the age of 18 go missing each year and the site allows young people to identify with a range of options relating to why they are thinking of leaving or why they are still feeling unhappy after being away.
