Asbestos management: Government survey reveals one fifth of schools not compliant with law

A government asbestos survey last year revealed that a fifth of schools were not fully compliant with legislation in managing the potentially deadly material in their buildings.

The results of the Department for Education’s (DfE) voluntary survey have just been published. A total of 5,592 schools in England responded between January and March 2016, with 83 per cent reporting that asbestos was present in their buildings; 16 per cent said they had no asbestos, while 1.3 per cent did not know.

The findings also revealed that 19 per cent of schools were not compliant with legislation on managing asbestos “in that they did not have fully documented plans, processes and procedures in place at the time of the data collection; or did not know if asbestos was present”.
