After a little encouragement, Clarissa, 13, wins music honour

After spending a summer entertaining audiences across London, a 13-year-old school girl has won the national Gigs Champion Busker of the Year Award.

Clarissa won after her music teacher, Catherine Bee, spotted the competition and suggested submitting some clips of her performing at the school and other events.

She was subsequently selected to take part in a range of events during July and August during which members of the public voted for their favourite performers.

Clarissa enjoyed the experience and volunteered to do more, filling in when other performers dropped out. In the end, she played her set about 20 times during the summer.

She said: “I was very nervous at the start, but I have really grown in confidence and I really enjoy this kind of public performance now and the immediate positive reactions you can get from complete strangers.”
