Workforce reform
March 2010

Workforce reform was published alongside SecEd and its sister title 5to7 Educator and in association with the Workforce Agreement Monitoring Group in February 2010. This supplement focuses on the impact that the National Agreement and subsequent workforce reforms have had for both school staff and learners. It offers an overview of what has happened since the historic National Agreement was signed back in 2003 and looks at how the benefits of workforce reform have been felt by school staff across England and Wales in both the primary and secondary sectors. We also look at the impact on students and how workforce reforms are helping to raise standards and achievement.The supplement features six case studies analysing how both primary and secondary schools have implemented workforce reforms and how they are continuing to focus on this agenda and reap the benefits. We also look to the future and what developments are on the horizon, including the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act, which has established the School Support Staff Negotiating Body.

Functional Skills
February 2010

Functional Skills, a 16-page A4 supplement, was published in association with the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) alongside the February 25, 2010, edition of SecEd. This supplement offers support and resources to all those working to implement the new Functional Skills qualifications in English, mathematics and ICT within the four learning pathways – GCSEs, Diplomas, Apprenticeships and Foundation Learning.
Functional Skills is broken up into four main sections, focusing on each of the four learning pathways. For each pathway, we offer key advice from Functional Skills experts within the QCDA and also hear from centres that are involved in the Functional Skills pilots and analyse the best practice and delivery methods that have been most successful.
We also include an overview of the introduction of Functional Skills and look forward to September 2010, when the full Functional Skills qualifications roll-out nationally (including a look at what leadership teams, practitioners and exam officers need to be doing to ensure they are fully prepared for roll-out).

The Qualifications and Credit Framework
January 2010

The Qualifications and Credit Framework was published by SecEd in association with the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) in January 2010. The publication focuses on making the new Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) work across the education spectrum – in schools, colleges, higher education, and employment. It details what the QCF is, what it means for you and your area of education, and how it works in practice. The publication offers illustrations and case studies of best practice, as well as crucial advice and guidance from QCDA experts. The supplement is split into sections with specific focuses on the QCF at Foundation level, within Apprenticeships and Diplomas, in further education, higher education, and the world of work. Alongside this, we have detailed illustrations of how the QCF fits into each phase of education from the point of view of both the student and the educator. We also focus on how the QCF can help institutions to meet their obligations under the Disability Equality Duty and include a brief overview of QCF funding.

Published in December 2009 by SecEd and our sister magazine 5to7 Educator, this 32-page supplement previews the BETT education technology show, which takes place in London from January 13 to 16, 2010. It offers practical advice to those attending the show, including a complete exhibitor list and floorplan, and also features a range of articles about ICT best practice and innovation. It includes features on voting systems, learning platforms, and games-based learning.

The globalised challenge
November 2009

Published in November 2009 in conjunction with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and in the run up to the organisation's 2009 national conference, this supplement explains and analyses the theme of the event - the globalised challenge. It looks at how our schools system must prepare today's students for the 21st century world and includes a focus on languages, international networks of educators, and the big debate - creativity versus knowledge.

Special Educational Needs
April 2009

This supplement, produced in association with the NASUWT, gives a comprehensive overview of the state of SEN education in the UK, with information broken down for each of the four home nations. We offer best practice and advice as well as case studies of good SEN practice. We also look at the developing policy agenda in this area and offer a raft of useful resources for teachers who educate SEN children in both the mainstream and special setting.

Controlled assessment

Produced in March 2009 in association with Edexcel, this supplement provides essential information on the new controlled assessment processes that are replacing coursework from September 2009. It focuses on the changes in each subject area, features case studies from the pilots, and general information on implementing these new processes.

Raising standards, narrowing the gaps

Published in March 2009 in conjunction with the National Strategies and in the run up to the 2009 Education Show, this 16-page supplement offers an update for teachers and heads of the work the Strategies is undertaking in the secondary arena. It focused specifically on narrowing the gaps in attainment between certain groups of students, as well as the support being offers for the planning of pupil progression. It also looks at the update Secondary Frameworks.

Assessing Pupils' Progress

Produced in January 2009 in association with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, this 16-page A4 supplement focuses on the work being done to develop Assessing Pupils' Progress in key stage 3. It offers a number of case studies from the pilot projects and breaks down APP in a number of areas, including the core subjects, foundation subjects, and speaking and listening. It also looks at the Secondary Frameworks and how APP and Assessment for Learning fit together.

DCSF International School Award

Produced in association with the British Council and SecEd's sister magazine 5to7 Educator, this eight-page supplement looks at the work of 10 schools that won the DCSF International School Award in 2008. It finds out what they did to embed international work and links into their school and their curriculum. It reports on secondary, primary and special schools.

BETT 2009 Supplement Guide

Published in December 2008 by SecEd and our sister magazine 5to7 Educator, this 48-page supplement previews the BETT education technology show, which takes place in London from January 14 to 17, 2009. In addition to offering practical advice to those attending the show, this guide also features a range of articles about ICT best practice and innovation, including features on whiteboards, learning platforms, and handheld technology.

Leading system redesign

Published in November 2008 in conjunction with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and in the run up to the organisation’s 2008 annual conference, this supplement delves into the theme of the event – Leading System Redesign. It features a number of useful school case studies and breaks down the overall theme, looking at Redesigning Learning, Redesigning Schooling, and Redesigning Leadership. There is also a focus on student voice.

Delivering Diplomas

Delivering Diplomas was produced in October 2008. The publication provided an up-to-date focus on the progress being made in the development and implementation of this new qualification. It looked at a number of case study schools in phase 1, which has just commenced delivery. It also looked ahead to phases 2 and 3 and reported on other key areas, including engaging employers, functional skills and the logistics of delivery.

21st century teacher

Published in September 2008 in conjunction with the General Teaching Council for England, this 16-page A4 supplement looks at the vast array of challenges facing the modern teacher. It tackles issues such as engaging parents, the new code of conduct for teachers, collaborative working within and outside of school, CPD, and the Every Child Matters agenda

Get ready for GCSEs

Published in September 2008 in conjunction with the exam board OCR, this 20-page A4 supplement previews the raft of changes that are currently being implemented when it comes to GCSEs. It tackles topics such as controlled assessment, disability legislation, a timeline for the GCSE changes, creativity within the curriculum and global citizenship.

Safe to teach?

Published in September 2008 in conjunction with the NASUWT teaching union, this 16-page A4 supplement offers advice and information about ensuring teachers can do their jobs safely. It tackles everything from false accusations, cyber-bullying, health and safety, school trips, workload and stress, behaviour management, and site security.

Building schools for the future

Published in May 2008, this 20-page A4 supplement offers advice and support to all schools that either going through, or are about to embark on, the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. It looks at best practice and innovation in current BSF schools, with advice from heads, architects and ICT experts as well as a number of case studies, including a focus on how to effectively involve your students in the process.

GCSE changes

Published in April 2008 in conjunction with exam board OCR this 20-page A4 supplement provided an update on the GCSE changes currently being implement. It offered a subject analysis, information on flexible assessment, controlled assessment and functional skills.

Education show 2008

Published in February 2008, this supplement previews the 2008 Education Show. While the show is now over, the 20-page A4 supplement features a range of articles about ICT best practice and innovation that teachers may still find of use in the classroom.

Ensuring progress for all

Published in February 2008 in conjunction with the National Strategies and in the run up to the 2008 Education Show, this 16-page supplement offered an update for teachers and heads of the work the Strategies is undertaking in the secondary arena. It covered the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning, English as an Additional Language, teaching of the core subjects, and inclusion.

Equality in schools

Published in January 2008 in conjunction with the NASUWT teaching union, this eight-page A3 supplement helps schools to effectively cater for and implement the equalities agenda. It explains the equalities legislations that affects schools and tackles issues such as fair recruitment practices, community cohesion and also offers advice to faith schools.

BETT 2008 supplement

Published in December 2007 by SecEd and our sister magazine 5to7 Educator, previewed the 2008 BETT educational technology show that took place in London in January 2008. While the show is now over, the 40-page A4 supplement features a range of articles about ICT best practice and innovation that teachers may still find of use in the classroom.

Sustaining our future

Published in November 2007 in conjunction with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and in the run up to the organisation’s 2007 annual conference, this supplement delved into the theme of the event – Sustaining our future. It looked at sustainable learning, communities, schools, how to sustain excellence through specialism and sustaining achievement and improvement. It features a number of useful school case studies.

Raising Standards

Published in October 2007 in conjunction with the NASUWT teaching union, this eight-page A3 supplement focused on the remodeling agenda, offering information, advice and support. It details what the National Agreement says and means for schools and teachers, looks at school case studies sharing good practice, the use of school support staff, and the external services and agencies that schools can use to help implement the agenda.

Choice and design

Published in September 2007 in conjunction with the Department for Children, Schools and Families, this eight-page A3 supplement focuses on delivering the new curriculum for 11 to 19-year-olds. It looked at Diplomas, personalised learning, the focus on skills and the new secondary curriculum.

Next steps

Published in September 2007 in conjunction with the General Teaching Council for England, this 16-page A4 and following up the previous year’s NQT supplement. This publication looks at second year teacher and continues to offer practical advice and support. It focuses on CPD, career paths, how to cope without your NQT support, and offers advice on SEN and behaviour management.

Managing behaviour

Published in April 2007 in conjunction with the NASUWT teaching union, this eight-page A3 supplement provides information, advice and practical guidance for teachers and schools on managing pupil behaviour. It looked at the implications of the Education and Inspections Act 2006, prejudice-related bullying, low-level disruption, cyber-bullying, the Safer Schools campaign and featured a number of school case studies.

Teaching for the future

Published in March 2007 in conjunction with the General Teaching Council for England, this 16-page A4 supplement offers crucial advice to teachers to help them manage the fast pace of change in today’s modern classrooms. It looks at personalised learning, the role of technology and CPD. It also focuses on teacher-led research and the GTCE’s Teacher Learning Academy.

Learning for the future

Published in March 2007 in conjunction with the National Strategies and in the run up to the 2007 Education Show, this 16-page supplement focused on the work of the Strategies in the core subject areas. It also looked at school improvement partners, the role of technology and SEN.

14-19 reforms explained

Published in February 2007 in conjunction with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, this eight-page A3 supplement focused on explaining the 14 to 19 reforms with a focus on the new Diplomas, the Qualifications and Credit Framework, and the skills agenda – including functional skills and personal, learning and thinking skills.

Secondary curriculum review explained

Published in February 2007 in conjunction with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, this eight-page A3 supplement detailed what the progress to that point that had been made with the ongoing review of the secondary curriculum. While the review has obviously moved on and the new secondary curriculum is now being implement, the supplement still offers some useful advice and information in this area.

Newly Qualified Teachers

Published in September 2006 in conjunction with the General Teaching Council for England, this eight-page A3 supplement offers advice and practical support for NQTs that will still be relevant today. It gives plenty of handy hints on what new teachers should look out for in their first months in the job. It tackles CPD and also offers links and contacts to a wealth of further information and resources

School visits guide

Published in September 2005, this 24-page guide offers advice and information for those planning school trips. There are recommendations for trips right across the UK and while some of the information will be dated, teachers may still pick up some useful ideas from the publication.
